  1. Explore Glencar Waterfall

One of Leitrim’s most iconic natural attractions, Glencar Waterfall is a must-visit. Located near Glencar Lough, this stunning 50-foot waterfall inspired the poet W.B. Yeats and features in his poem “The Stolen Child.” A short and accessible trail leads visitors to the waterfall, where you can enjoy the serene beauty of the cascading water and surrounding woodland.

County Leitrim has a great array of waterways from the wild Atlantic Ocean in the north of the county to its many streams, rivers, canals and lakes. The Shannon–Erne Waterway is a canal linking the River Shannon in the Republic of Ireland with the River Erne in Northern Ireland. The canal is 63 km in length, has sixteen locks and runs from Leitrim village in County Leitrim to Upper Lough Erne in County Fermanagh. The Sliabh an Iarainn Visitor Centre is located in the picturesque setting of Acres Lake in Drumshanbo. The Centre has audio-visual displays about the Arigna and the Sliabh an Iarainn mountains area, with a special emphasis on the railway, the canal, lakes, and iron and coal mining and musical heritage of the area.​ While you’re there, don’t forget to pick up a copy of Leitrim’s Playgrounds passport.
