Explore this two hour drive that take you in and around the stunning and picturesque Blueway, where you will find some of the best multi-level activity trails in the region.
County Leitrim is defined by its waterways and is home to the Blueway which is a network of trails running on and alongside its lakes, rivers an canals. These trails take you deep into Leitrim’s unspoilt landscape either on foot or by bike or canoe.
Breathe in the clear air and enjoy the peace and quiet as you make stops in the in this magical location.
This driving tour will take approximately 2 hours and we suggest you allow extra time to visit some of our recommend stops and perhaps enjoy one of the activities available.

Your itinerary
Stop 1: Manorhamilton to Leitrim Village
Start your day in the pretty market town of Manorhamilton where you can enjoy a bite to eat or a spot of shopping. The heritage trail is well worth exploring. It starts at Manorhamilton Castle, a 17th century plantation castle which was built by Sir Frederick Hamilton between 1634 and 1638. there is a Farmers market in the town every Friday from 10.00 to 12.00 and is well worth a visit.
Your drive to Leitrim Village takes you on the R280. On your way you will pass through the pretty village of Drumkeeran just north of Lough Allen. Here you will get a sense of old Ireland as you stroll along the Main Street. A short drive away from the village is Spencer Harbour . The harbour was named for the 5th Earl Spencer an ancestor of Diana, Princess of Wales. There is a lovely picnic area on the lake shore.
Stop 2: Blueway Cycle - Leitrim Village to Drumshanbo
Have a day to remember cycling along the banks of the Blueway on the Lough Allen Canal and then onto Drumshanbo for lunch. This is an easy cycle, on flat terrain and suitable for all the family. It is a 25 km round trip.
You pick up your bike from Electric Bike Trails in Leitrim Village where they have a range of bikes of all sizes to hire. From adult hybrid bikes, electric bikes, tandems to childrens’ bikes and seats. Self guided or guided tours are available and we recommend that book you bikes in advance to avoid disappointment.
Stop 3: Explore Drumshanbo
Drumshanbo is a busy town with lots to see and enjoy. Take a walk along the unique floating boardwalk around Acres Lake keeping a look out for any wildlife you may see on the way including swans, fish, butterflies, dragonflies and more.
In the summer you can visit the outdoor heated swimming pool and the Sliabh an Iarainn Visitor Centre where you can learn about the industrial heritage of the area is close by.
Why not take a tour of The Shed Distillery, home of Drumshanbo Gunpowder Gin and Drumshanbo Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey where you can follow the journey behind the creation of Connacht’s first whiskey for 105 years.
Stop 4: Leitrim Village
Leitrim Village is a small bustling village that is located on the Shannon with access to both the Shannon Blueway and the Shannon Erne Blueway. The village was an O’Rourke stronghold in Medieval times and was a place of some strategic important as the nearby river was easily forded. There are a number of places to eat including local friendly pubs and the hotel which is located on the waterfront. Activities such as cycling and stand-up paddling are available locally.
Other Nearby attractions: Arigna Mining Experience which preserves the heritage of the Arigna Valley and is Ireland’s first coal mining museum which is open daily 10 – 6 pm seven days a week. Last tour at 5.00 pm
