The Cavan and Leitrim Railway in Dromod was one of the most fascinating, and at one time busiest, of Ireland’s narrow-gauge railways. This lovingly restored railway offers you the chance to step back in time and experience the age of steam transport in rural Ireland.
The history of the railway is of great importance to this little part of Ireland and its people. Locals were very devoted to the running of the Cavan and Leitrim Railway and it was their dedication that ensured the line could successfully handle the coal traffic, which was of vital importance to the region.
Today the station is home to an extensive collection of steam and diesel trains, rolling stock, and vintage buses. A tour of the site will take approximately 40 – 50 minutes and includes a trip on the train and a tour of the engine sheds, workshops and the site in general.
In 2019 The Cavan and Leitrim Railway were delighted to welcome “Nancy” home to Leitrim. Nancy, a narrow gauge steam locomotive, built in Bristol in 1908, spent her life working in the ironstone industry until 1961. The Avonside “Nancy” Restoration Group was founded as a joint effort by volunteers on a number of Ireland’s Narrow gauge railways, with the ultimate goal of returning Avonside built 3ft gauge Nancy to Ireland and to steaming condition. After a 22 year restoration project, their goal was realised and Nancy steamed back into life on The Cavan and Leitrim Railway.
