A stone cross over a small gate, outside the old town gate, leads to the remains of Jamestown Abbey, a Franciscan friary of the Friars’ Minor.
The Friary was founded after the occupation of Jamestown, in 1642, by the O’Rourkes. A synod was held here in 1650 and the last recorded chapter meeting took place in 1650.
The remains of a small church associated with the friars still stand by the river.
