Tomás Ó Máille (1880-1938) was the inaugural Professor of Irish at University College Galway. A folklore and song collector, newspaper editor, linguist, and teacher, Ó Máille was in a pioneer in many ways. His greatest foresight was his commitment to the newest technology of his day – audio recording. From 1928, he created hundreds of recordings of Irish speakers from Connacht and assisted the recording work of other collectors and scholars. In celebrating Ó Máille’s outstanding legacy, this exhibition shares his message of cultural equity and active citizenship, principles that are hugely significant for minoritised languages all over the world.
A bilingual Exhibition celebrating the life and work of Prof. Tomás Ó Máille, first professor of Irish at the University of Galway.
