Surf Safari
Leitrim Surf Company will arrange for you to explore the waterways of Leitrim via paddleboard, and it’s just as much fun as it sounds.
With three routes to choose from, this water-world is your oyster. Explore the Drumshanbo Canal between Acres Lake and Lough Allen. Drink in the lush greenery as you saunter down the canal on your paddleboard. If you decide to paddleboard between Leitrim Village to Battlebridge, or vice versa, you can work up a thirst on the Shannon Blueway between the two villages.
For those looking for a bit more of a challenge, Leitrim Surf Company offer a four-hour long, early evening safari. The safari begins at Lough Allen and moves down the Shannon, encountering flat and moving water. Then, satiate that fierce appetite you’ll have after all that exercise with a barbecue at Beirne’s of Battlebridge.
Cycling the lakes and forests
If you enjoy the wind in your hair, check out the Kingfisher Cycle Trail. Taking in some of Leitrim and neighbouring Fermanagh’s most stunning scenery, there are trails of varying difficulties and lengths.
If you’re a keen cyclist, it’s definitely worth tackling the more challenging routes – you will be justly rewarded for your efforts with breathtaking views. Other trails are perfect for inexperienced riders and should you not want to break a sweat there are always electric bicycles for rent.
Explore the waterways
Leitrim’s extensive waterways are perfect for canoeing. Whether you’re interested in touring still, flat, glassy waters or mastering a little white-water action, you’ll find a lesson or course to suit your pace with Lough Allen Adventure.
The guys at Lough Allen Adventure even organise island expeditions, making a cargo boat out of two canoes tied together. Now, that’s ingenuity.
Take a hike
Do you love nothing better than exploring the landscape by foot? If so, Leitrim is brimming with options for you. The Glenfarne Walk traverses some of the highest points of Glenfarne Wood and is perfectly situated for you to take a break and appreciate the vista over Lough MacNean.
If you really feel like pushing your hiking boots to the limit, try the Leitrim’s Looped Walks trailing old and new paths, but it offers an unequalled chance to witness the beauty of the Leitrim wilds on foot.
Discover Leitrim on horseback
Fans of the equestrian life; Leitrim offers splendid scenes for you to witness on horseback. If you’re a novice you might want to opt for a trek, while those more experienced can ride out over jumps and into the wild. Moorlands Equestrian and Leisure Centre offers both options, with the added advantage of its enviable location on the shore of scenic Lough Allen.
Of course these are only five highlights and there’s much, much more to be found, but the one thing that unites all of these things is the fresh, crisp country air and stunning scenery of Leitrim. Breathe it in…
