Leitrim Glens Sportive
August 18, 2019
The Leitrim Glens Sportive is on Sunday 18 August 2019 and this is a non-competitive, annual event. All routes begin and end at the Bee Park Community Centre, Manorhamilton. Refreshments are provided along the routes and there is hot meal for all cyclists when they finish. This is included in the registration price. Each major climb along the Sportive routes is marked by continental style signs giving the name, distance and average gradient of the climb ahead. 24 continental-style cycling signs were designed and installed in Summer 2018 with LEADER funding and support from Leitrim Development Company and Leitrim County Council. The signs are the first of their kind in Ireland and this initiative will add greatly to the enjoyment of the sportive and of County Leitrim as a cycling destination.
See www.leitrimglens.com and the Leitrim Glens Facebook page for photos of the signs in situ. There are four routes this year. The 40km route is designed to cater for novice cyclists and for people who are looking for a leisurely introduction to sportive cycling. The 100km route is ideal for club cyclists, it covers rolling terrain with just one climb within the last 15km. There is a foodstop halfway along the route at the Lough Allen Hotel, Drumshanbo and there is a water stop in Drumkeerin Village. The 150km route is suitable for more experienced cyclists who train a few times a week. This route mirrors the 200km cycle but has only 3 climbs. The first food stop is at approx. 50km, in Kiltyclogher Village and then the route goes into the first climb. There is a second foodstop past the 100km mark in the Lough Allen Hotel, Drumshambo. There is a waterstop 18km after the hotel and then it is into the two climbs. Once over, there is a nice descent back to Manorhamilton. The 200km route is designed for experienced cyclists as it includes 2,600m of climbing over 9 categorised climbs throughout County Leitrim. The first foodstop is at 70km in Kiltyclogher Village and you will have completed 4 climbs by then. After Kiltyclogher there are 2 climbs, a waterstop, a 12km climb and the second foodstop at Lough Allen Hotel,Drumshambo. After the hotel there is 2 final climbs before descending back to Manorhamilton. Route details, maps, GPX files and profiles of the climbs are available at www.leitrimglens.com.
The website also has a list of accomadation in the area. The entry fee is €25 for the 40k, €30 for the 100k and €40 for the 150k/200k.
