There are some fine examples of castles in Leitrim including Manorhamilton Castle and Parkes Castle. Both are open to the public
Castles in Leitrim Parkes Castle – constructed in the early 1600s this fortified manor house sits on the shores of Lough Gill. Once an important stronghold of the O’Rourke Clan, rulers of Breffni, Parke’s Castle has been restored, using traditional craftsmanship, to its true 17th century style. Guided tours available Manorhamilton Castle – The imposing castle was built in 1638 during the plantation of Sir Fredrick Hamilton. On display is a permanent exhibition including artefacts from the 17th century, replica period costumes, furniture and other interesting items and information. Kinlough – MacClancy Castle – Nine survivors of shipwrecked sailors from the Spanish Armada took refuge in this castle on Lough Melvin in 1588.
